Neurosurgeon Jordan Komisarow, MD, has been named the Physician Vice President of the Neurosciences and Spine service line at Duke Health, effective July 1.
“We could not be prouder of Dr. Komisarow to be the first physician champion of this new service line,” said Gerald Grant, MD, MBA, chair of Duke Neurosurgery.
Komisarow will serve as the senior clinical leader for the Neurosciences and Spine service line. He will partner with Shilpa Shelton, Administrative Vice President, Neurosciences and Spine Services, in a dyad leadership model to advance the service line's strategic vision, clinical excellence, operational performance, and academic mission.

This service line creates a powerful opportunity to more tightly align our strategy, operations, and innovation to reimagine how care is delivered. This will enable us to expand access across our markets, elevate the patient experience, and build on Duke’s world-class excellence in neurosciences and spine care”
Komisarow and Shelton will collaborate with the chairs of Duke Neurosurgery and Duke Neurology and chief of Duke Spine to ensure alignment with Duke Health’s strategic priorities and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across the care continuum.

Komisarow earned his bachelor’s at Duke and stayed for medical school, residency, and fellowship before joining the Duke Neurosurgery faculty.
He completed fellowships in both surgical critical care and neurocritical care, making him one of a small number of neurosurgeons in the country with this combination of training. He is board certified in neurosurgery with special recognition in neurocritical care, as well as board certified in surgical critical care.
His leadership positions at Duke have included Director of Neurocritical Care and Trauma, Medical Director of the Neurosciences ICU, Surgical Director of the Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis, Surgical Director of the Duke Pituitary Center, and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations. His clinical expertise lies in pituitary tumors, brain metastases, and neurocritical care.
