Deborah Koltai, PhD, Tony Fuller, MD, of Duke Global Neurosurgery and Neurology (DGNN) were declared winners of a competition sponsored by the Epilepsy Foundation. The pair developed an app for adolescents with epilepsy in Uganda, focused on self-management and resilience.
The Shark Tank Community Impact Award provides $25,000 to an important product or technology to help people with epilepsy that is not on a commercialization pathway.
Fuller is an assistant professor of neurosurgery and associate director of DGNN. He was part of the team that helped found DGNN in 2014, as the first division in the U.S. dedicated solely to global neurosurgery and neurology. His research efforts focus on health system strengthening and development in neurosurgery and neurology in East Africa.
Koltai is an associate professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Neurology, and Neurosurgery. Her research focuses on factors related to care of epilepsy patients in Uganda.
