Gottfried Promoted to Professor with Tenure

Duke neurosurgeon Oren Gottfried, MD,  has been promoted to professor with tenure in Duke University School of Medicine, effective July 1, 2018. He also serves as co-director of Duke Spine Center, co-director of the Spine Unit and Clinic at Duke University Hospital, and clinical vice chair for quality in the Duke Department of Neurosurgery.

Gottfried specializes in the surgical management of spinal diseases. He has special interest in the treatment of lumbar deformities, occipital-cervical problems, and in helping patients with complex spinal issues from previously unsuccessful surgery or recurrent disease.

Through his work in quality and safety, Gottfried has developed quality initiatives and new methods of prospective data collection for reviewing, reducing, and accurately documenting all deaths, readmissions and complications. He has established ongoing partnerships between Duke Neurosurgery and other departments throughout the Duke Health enterprise in order to establish a more comprehensive team approach to quality improvements. In parallel, his research focuses on collection and assessment of prospective clinical databases institutionally and nationally to improve patient satisfaction, surgical results, and methods to ensure safer and more desirable outcomes.

Gottfried received his medical degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He completed neurosurgical residency and an orthopedic deformity spine fellowship at the University of Utah and a surgical spinal oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. In his free time, he enjoys consulting for multiple network television series. He and his family live in Chapel Hill, NC.
