Southwell Awarded Prestigious Fellowship

Derek Southwell, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the Duke Department of Neurosurgery, has been awarded the Klingenstein-Simons Fellowship Award in Neuroscience. This award is one of the most prestigious fellowships for young investigators in neuroscience, and Dr. Southwell is one of only a few neurosurgeons to receive the award in the past 20 years.

Dr. Southwell and his research team are focused on understanding the development and function of the cerebral cortex, and developing cortical interneuron transplantation as a treatment for neurologic disorders and injuries.

Aimed at advancing cutting-edge investigations, the Klingenstein-Simons awards are presented to highly promising early career scientists, and are intended support higher-risk and potentially higher-reward projects.
