Getting to Know Sherolyn Patterson

For a resident brand new to Duke, having a go-to with all the answers can make all the difference.  For Duke Neurosurgery residents, that person is Sherolyn Patterson. She has been working with residents at Duke -- in Internal Medicine and Cardiology before coming to Neurosurgery – since 1996.

As Graduate Medical Education Program Coordinator, Sherolyn helps get residents, fellows, and sub-interns from start to finish. She manages recruitment, board certifications, evaluations, compliance, and all the other pieces of the puzzle. Not surprisingly, she says she considers them all family. Recruitment is the most enjoyable part of her job, she says, because she loves meeting new people.

Away from Duke, Sherolyn loves to cook, read, and line dance. And if it’s funny, she says, she loves to laugh. She is very involved with her church and its various ministries. She sings and travels with an a cappella group called ASAP (A Capella Singers Adding Praise) and teaches Sunday school to elementary school-aged kids. Sherolyn and her husband Marcus have a son, Tyler, who is in college. She and Marcus have been married for 23 years and met (where else?) at a church singles retreat.
