Duke Neurosurgery Continues to Improve in Quality Measures

Duke Neurosurgery continues to improve in quality, ranking near the top of its peer group, according to data supplied by Vizient, a national company that measures performance for health care organizations.

The latest data puts Duke Neurosurgery ranking third among peer groups for mortality, based on data from the last six months.

“As a department, we made it a priority to focus on quality and satisfaction,” says Oren Gottfried, MD,  neurosurgeon and vice chair for quality. “We identified specific methods for improving performance, and they have shown results.” These methods included systematic review of mortality data, identifying quality and operational improvement strategies, and case reviews.

Before this systematic approach to quality was implemented a little more than five years ago, Duke Neurosurgery was not in the top 25 centers, based on this performance data.
